About

Ayr Boswell – The History
Ayr Boswell Boys Club is one of the oldest and largest boys clubs in the West of Scotland. It was formed in 1963 by two workers of the Ayr Bakery, which was then located in Boswell Park, Ayr (hence the name). The aim of the club at that time was to provide a much needed sports facility for the local youths.

These aims are still there today and, over the years, players from our ranks have gone on to senior clubs and professional management in football.

Today, much as we’ve done for over 40 years, Ayr Boswell promotes and educates our young people in sport and respect. We have groups ranging from under 8 up  to 19 years and we are totally dedicated to helping the young people under our tuition in both their sporting and personal development. Our many teams, covering well over 120+ young people from all across South West Scotland, wear the famous Ayr Boswell shirt with pride every week. Our teams participate in 7-a-side development football and 11-a-side league and cup football, as well as local, national and international youth football tournaments.

Home Fixtures for the majority of the Ayr Boswell teams are played at either The Old Racecourse and/or King George V Playing Fields, Ayr
The Old Racecourse was given by Royal Charter to the burgh in the 13th century as a common. In the late 18th century it became a racecourse and the first Ayr Gold Cup was run around 1804. Racing continued on this site until 1907 when the ground was converted to playing fields and as part of the Seafield Golf Course.

It is used for matches via full-sized football pitches or a host of small sized pitches for young players as well as for hosting nationally renowned youth football competitions such as the Land O’ Burns Sevens Soccer Festival and Scotland National 7′s Soccer Festival. It has also been used as a venue for a Cattle Show, Pipe Band Contest and Sheep Dog Trials

Each of the Ayr Boswell teams take part in the West of Scotland Youth Football League at either 11-a-side or 7-a-side Development level. The league began life in 1965 when Ayr man, Bert McRoberts, who about that time, had been organising a local primary school team, was encouraged by a few others to establish a League for teams operating outwith the schools set up. And so, through the efforts of Bert, the Ayr and District Under 14s League was born.

Over the years the League grew with demand and under the stewardship of its presidents Bert McRoberts, David Cochrane, Archie Thomson and Tom Young, it has grown to be the largest League in the area.

The League attracts teams from the length and breadth of Ayrshire and into Dumfries and Galloway. Currently there are around 70 teams playing Development Football and around 100 teams playing eleven-a-side football. There are approximately 2,500 players registered to play in the West.  (Source www . leaguewebsite.co.uk / westofscotlandyfl/ )
